Journal of my prison life / J.B. Dorr. [1978?]

The diary gives a detailed account of what happened to the 12th and 14th Iowa infantry regiments during the Battle of Shiloh. Diary entries following the battle describe how the prisoners were moved about, daily prisoner activities, treatment by Dorr's captors, his release on May 25, 1862, and the trip home.

J.B. Dorr was a resident of Dubuque, Iowa. He served as quartermaster for the 12th Iowa Infantry from November 1861 until May 1863 when he was mustered out for promotion to colonel of the 8th Iowa Cavalry. Dorr was taken prisoner during the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862 along with 340 other soldiers from his regiment and 224 soldiers from the 14th Iowa Infantry Regiment.
